FLIGHTS OF FANCY

Summer fled without a hug and snows have barged in early

Chilly leaves litter my rug and I am growing surly

Too much darkness in the day makes me want to fly away

With the sparrows to Bombay with all the other birdies

I wonder where on earth they go, winging far away from snow

Alongside a lifelong beau to a flower-painted land

Leaving all these nests behind, etched against a cold slate sky

And lonesome for their lullaby, the branches reprimand

I hear them creak and moan and sigh

They try to sing and so do I

They'll fill your crannies by and by, say I, when buds return

Flights of fancy in my head

I will take this winter

Make it fly like summer did

I'll nestle in my dreams

Melt the snowdrift in my bed

Make of it a fountain

Whisper things still left unsaid

Ride the ripples of the stream

Tonight I'll make my own starlight, kindle all the candles

Sing a larksong, dance her flight, float above the brambles

Fill the silent sunrise up, make a jubilee

Let the music warm my cup, take a flight of fancy

Flights of fancy...

BUTTERFLIES

Come and play with David, touch your heart today

Once those dimples find you, you'll never be the same

If he tosses you the secret that dances in his eyes

And if your soul can catch it, it turns to butterflies

No one really knows what butterflies can do

He's kept his secret very well but with each passing moon

We come a little closer to David's special place

The seasons' shifting breezes reveal his cunning grace

If you understand the magic of pantomime and dreams

Or the poetry in fireflies' light paintings on the screens

You may catch a fleeting glimmer of moonlight in his hair

And in the trail of stardust see a message written there, saying

Lighten up your burden and come along with me

Sit under a waterfall or listen to a tree telling

Stories you may recognize about letting go of pain and

Finding your own wisdom in the rhythm of the rain

For butterflies are rainbows with secrets in their wings

Folks say they're too fragile but it's miracles they bring

If one lights upon your shoulder there are gifts you can't describe

That may take awhile to show themselves but bring your soul alive

So come and play with David, touch your heart today...

TEARS

Hurricane rains are thrashing Mexico

And she's heading up this way

Just like the storms inside you

Tossing your dreams aside

You wonder how dearly must we pay

They're auctioning off my parents' household

Cushions and music boxed away

Portraits and handcarved tables

Grandfather clocks with gables

Memories vanished in a day

Like you told me in the aftermath

As you held me to your breast

You said  The red face cries

'Cause he just tries and tries

Then he dries his eyes and

Tears rest

Wash your tears away, my winsome one

Your life unfolds before you

It's begun

Your time apart has taught you things

That we can only try to see

They're fighting fires down on Main Street

Right where ice storms hit last year

Just when you think you've made it

Winds can just come and take it

And the thing that heals you

Is your tears

Wash your tears now that you've let them roll

Take a deep breath now, you're in control

It took a little longer

But now you're so much stronger

Hope is rising in your soul

And like you told me...

SHINE

He dreams of a day when free friends come

Not just the ones who are told

He beams like the rays of a rising sun

When somebody hears his soul

But that sort of thing isn't taught in school

It's never been found in the charts, the records, the data, the terms, the rules

That no one would find in a heart

Of a beautiful boy with a blessed smile

Who sees more than we'll ever know

How do you hear when a heart says yes

If the deeds only manage a no

The hand of a friend is the way

Connecting us, freeing the days

When words won't come, when a heart goes numb

Who but a friend lights the way

Who but a friend could say

Like a star in Orion's belt

He shines

Like the water that springs from the well

It's time

See! We are all entwined

Like the strands in the spider's design

With your hand in mine

We shine

But that sort of thing isn't done in school

How could they all just agree

When the records, the data, the terms, and the rules

Might never let them see

Like a star...

IF YOU HADN'T

If you hadn't come

I'd still be the one and only

Always on the run

Who knows just how lost and lonely

I would have become

If you hadn't come

If you hadn't hurt

I'd still think that I could fix it

I'd have never heard

All the stillnesses amidst the dreams beyond the night

I would still be blind

I'd still think the sun was yellow

And the moon was white

Still be seeing colors only this side of the light

If you weren't beside me

If you hadn't come

Lighting up a heart would just be someone else's fun

I would be among the dusky people running from

Something to be won

I'd have thought that rainbows turn up only in the sky

Or that Roman candles only set off in July

If I'd never seen the seven wonders of your smile

I'd be pretty glum

Beating my own drum

If you

Hadn't

Come

HINT OF YOU

Harvest moon was shifting in the shadows

The night a bitter wind swept through her heart

His tone was strangely broken with staccatos

And when he drove away she wondered what remark

Had turned the love she knew into a stranger

In the middle of their precious time to talk

So she slipped her arms around her silent angel,

Her only child, whose speech had run amok

And she asked him if he knew what surly mystery

Had caused their man to up and run away

With a grin his fingers spelled the perfect message

No sage could find a better way to say -- he said

Sometimes words don't hope

He told her Mom, you know,

Sometimes that's where you tend to overdo

When he is feeling low

And he just wants to go

That's just the time he needs a hint of you

Since words sustain her so

It's hard for her to know

When silence feeds the other point of view

But when he comes back home

He'll toss the worry stone into the fire

And know that something's new

It's in the air

He needs a hint of you

Here it was again, a precious pearl of wisdom

From a child who simply wasn't supposed to know

But she knew every time she's opened up her vision

In the darkest night this laser light would glow with pearls like

Words don't hope

When he is feeling low

Sometimes there's only one thing you can do...

...

That's just the time he needs

A hint

of you

WHAT IF

What if I told you that all that your spirit could see

Was all that you ever would need

And that the bold you was who you would make yourself be

When fear was all you could see

What if the moment it took just to ask for the key

Was all it would take to be free

And what if you knew that the key had been waiting right there

In your heart, where it always will be

I know that it sounds pretty simple

But life can be funny that way

It takes us along, we forget how to be strong

We forget what our songs always say

That love is the thing that we cling to

And fear's what we just blow away

Especially when somebody else thinks they know more than you

What it is that your own heart must say

What if I told you that when you would know this is true

Is a day you may be old and grey

Well darlin', that's okay

It's the way of the world

It's a gift that you'll give away

Hey baby, that's okay

It's the way of the world

It's a gift that you'll give away

SIROCCO

Like the hot waves off the Cape that day in November

You came with the quick wind like July

And the mirth of no baby we could remember

And the gaze of the Old Ones in your eye

So why is it I still wonder

At the wily marvels you weave

Like the rush of gold in the wake of rainclouds

Like the lone mighty leaf that holds to the tree

Like the songs sirens sing with the angels

Like the rolling secrets of the sea

Like the ghost dancers' echoes off the canyons

Like sirocco stirs a mountain's dreams

Sirocco, you pull, twist and turn me

Your song haunts my soul

Your breath holds new direction

Your heart helps me let go

I wait with the will to catch your courage

I yield to the Wise Ones you hear

I stand up with thanks for you in November

Windsong of my heart

Strong one more year

You're the strong one

Like the hot waves off the Cape that day in November

THAT'S YOUR WAY

We thought and thought about what to give you

Something nice for sweet Olivia

A tape, a game, a special book

A pretty doll who's got your looks

But somehow we could not decide

So Mom said she would take a ride

'Cause that's when stuff can leave her mind

When quiet comes, when she unwinds

And sure enough her last thought fled

And in the sky just up ahead

Appeared some blackbirds on the wing

And Mom began to laugh and sing

What a lovely sight

A taste of spring on such a cold, cold day

They're on the wing

They never hide

They're not afraid

They simply fly

'Cause that's their way

Suddenly Mom thought of you

The hope you bring, your sweetness too

You and your mom, you wouldn't run

You come, you share, and we have fun

So this song is just for you

We'd just like to say

Thank you

For golden light

For who you are

For showing me your trusting heart

What a lovely sight

A taste of spring

On such a cold, cold day

You're here with me

You never hide

You're not afraid

You simply smile

'Cause that's your way

That's your way

PRAYER

As I think of my life before you were here

There wasn't a lot that I knew

There just wasn't much pluck to ruffle my soul

Down deep where it counts

Before you

Life rolled along, a nice little song

That was simple enough to sing

I gave what I had

And I thought that

That was all there needed to be

Then one day there was you

The earth was still blue

But the colors had suddenly changed

There was gold in your hair

And everywhere there were rainbows

And then

There was rain

It came down in cups and in buckets and floods

It came when I wasn't prepared

It came and I couldn't get out of the mud

Til I just let the rain be a

Prayer

And that's when the words you'd been smiling and sending me

Suddenly rang very clear

Just let the hard things happen

Brave it and set free your fear

Just let the hard things happen

That's how the help can appear

And it still comes down in buckets and torrents and floods

And most times I'm never prepared

But now I can breathe

And step right through the mud

Til the sound of the rain is a prayer

I'll just let the rain be a

Prayer

LULLABY

Kick your tiny heels up, baby

It's safe in here and warm

Nothing cold can touch you, baby

Perfect shelter from the storm

Sometimes I watch you moving

And it always makes me smile

And it won't be long

It won't be long

Til you're in my arms, love child

Will you like the world, baby

Will it welcome you with care

Will there always be enough love

To guide you anywhere

And when it hurts you, baby

Will you find the strength inside

To just hold your head up, baby

And still enjoy the ride

My wish for you, sweet baby

Is that you will find your way

All we can do is show you

The best we know each day

It's the choices you'll make, baby

That'll show you who you are

And the love in your heart, baby

That'll take you to the stars
